Join us as Pat Riehl explains in words and photos the story of building a Victorian Stumpery on Vashon.

“A true stumpery is not just a stump that somebody has found and then planted,” says Pat as she tells  her story of building a Victorian Stumpery on Vashon. A landscape filled with stumps that serve both as sculptural elements as well as home to many plants.  Pat will explain some of the history of stumperies as well.

What is a Stumpery?

Stumperies are garden features made from dead tree parts, such as stumps, logs, branches, and bark–debris that commonly clutters yards after a storm. Contemporary stumperies sometimes feature driftwood, railway ties, and floorboards.
